چکیده

Context. For the past 3 years we have been monitoring a sample of 62 K giant stars using precise stellar radial velocity measurements with high accuracy taken at the Thüringer Landessternwarte Tautenburg. Aims. To search for sub-stellar companions to giant stars and to understand the nature of the diverse radial velocity variations exhibited by K giant stars. Methods. We present precise stellar radial velocity measurements of the K1III giant star 4 UMa (HD 73108). These were obtained using the coudé echelle spectrograph of 2-m Alfred Jensch Telescope. The wavelength reference for the radial velocity measurements was provided by an iodine absorption cell. Results. Our measurements reveal that the radial velocity of 4 UMa exhibits a periodic variation of 269.3 days with a semiamplitude K = 216.8 m s −1. A Keplerian orbit with an eccentricity, e = 0.43 ± 0.02 is the most reasonable explanation for the radial velocity variations. The orbit yields a mass function, f (m) = (2.05 ± 0.24) × 10 −7 M⊙. From our high resolution spectra we calculate a metallicity of −0.25 ± 0.05 and derive a stellar mass of 1.23 M⊙ ± 0.15 for the host star. Conclusions. The K giant star 4 UMa hosts a substellar companion with minimum mass M sin i = 7.1 ± 1.6 MJupiter.

No evidence of a hot Jupiter around HD 188753 A ⋆

Context. The discovery of a short-period giant planet (a hot Jupiter) around the primary component of the triple star system HD 188753 has often been considered as an important observational evidence and as a serious challenge to planet-formation theories. Aims. Following this discovery, we monitored HD 188753 during one year to better characterize the planetary orbit and the feasibility of pla...

A NICMOS Direct Imaging Search for Giant Planets around the Single White Dwarfs in the Hyades

We report preliminary results from our search for massive giant planets (6-12 Jupiter masses) around the known seven single white dwarfs in the Hyades cluster at sub-arcsec separations. At an age of 625 Myr, the white dwarfs had progenitor masses of about 3 solar masses, and massive gaseous giant planets should have formed in the massive circumstellar disks around these ex-Herbig A0 stars, prob...

Astronomers have established that for a few million years newborn stars possess disks of orbiting gas and dust. Such disks, which are likely sites of planet formation, appear to disappear once these stars reach ages of 5-10 × 10 yr; yet, ≥ 10 yr is thought necessary for giant planet formation. If disks dissipate in less time than is needed for giant planet formation, such planets may be rare an...

Search for Giant Planets around White Dwarfs with HST , Spitzer , and VLT

For the last three years we have performed a survey for young (< 3 Gyrs) giant planets around nearby white dwarfs with HST, Spitzer, and VLT. Direct HST/NICMOS imaging of the seven white dwarfs in the Hyades gave no evidence for companions down to about 10 Jupiter masses and separations larger than 0.5 arcsec (∼ 25 AU), while VLT/NACO observations revealed a putative companion to a field white ...

A planet - sized transiting star around OGLE - TR - 122 ⋆ Accurate mass and radius near the Hydrogen - burning limit

We report the discovery and characterisation of OGLE-TR-122b, the smallest main-sequence star to date with a direct radius determination. OGLE-TR-122b transits around its solar-type primary every 7.3-days. With M = 0.085± 0.008M⊙ and R = 0.114± 0.009R⊙, it is by far the smallest known eclipsing M-dwarf. The derived mass and radius for OGLE-TR-122b are in agreement with the theoretical expectati...
